From Pro-Team Artist Chris Rigoni of Melbourne, Australia comes his new ink set, Shapes and Shadows. Named for the dimensional style of the incredibly lifelike pieces he has become known for.
For Shape there is bright teal and bright red. Two common colors used in his designs as overlays and shapes to cut-up designs. Also, as a contrast to the more subdued colors used in realism.
For Shadow, there are 3 muted hues divided into 3 different tones. There is a cool, neutral, and warm hue that are further broken up into dark, middle, and light tones. Chris often uses the muted colors in the realistic side of his designs – skulls, portraits, roses, galaxy and space tattoos. Either as natural colors in the design, or for something to dip into and desaturate brighter colors, but never to adjust the warmth or coolness of the color.
To add depth, Chris likes to have the shapes that he puts into his designs that cross behind and in front of the subject matter. He then adds shadows onto the subject matter where they crossover. For a more realistic look, he recommends using desaturated colors for shadows. Hence the Shadow part of the name.
This muted set can also be used for any type of realism and neo traditional pieces, especially for black and grey artists who want to mix things up with an opaque background or section of the design. The Shapes and Shadows set can also be used for an opaque desaturated tattoo that has just a hint of color to it rather than strictly black and grey.
“[It’s called] Shapes and Shadows because of the shapes I put in tattoos: the two bright colours and shadows being the “dirtier” colours I use. [Add these colors] to get the shadows I put on the subject matter, just under the shapes.” - Chris Rigoni
